The exhibition Excavated colors showed the results from a collaboration of me with artist Cor van der Meijden. We have exhibited together before, and I proposed to work together on a project.

Read more about the works and the process to create them here, here and here. For the occasion of the exhibition we published a brochure with some background that you can find here. I have a few available so if you want to receive a physical copy let me know and I’ll send it to you.

Artist statement Cor van der Meijden:

‘The beauty of decay’

Weathered, faded, faded or discoloured objects fascinate me because time has left its mark on them. By using these characterful objects in combination with geometrically abstract forms, a visual language is created that refers to itself independently of reality. In this way, ‘old’ inspires me to new. Like ‘excavated pictures’ excavated from my mind.In my collages, I work with mixed media: found paper and cardboard, tape, acrylic paint, gesso, marker, pencil, ballpoint… focusing on form, line, colour, composition and structure.

My artist statement for this exhibition:

In the Monochromasters series, I use a computer programme to calculate the average colour of existing works of art. Then I reproduce the works in the same format as the original works.I wanted to see if anything of a connection to the original remains. What is the essence of a work of art? When does a reproduction lose all connection with the original. The process reminds me of homeopathy: trying to dilute the originals to the extreme so that the result has a strong effect in itself.

When I create the physical works in this series, high-quality glicée prints on art paper, at the same size as the originals, I really feel the ethereal connection these works have with their original source works. This duo presentation is the first time the Monochromasters have been presented alongside the original artworks on which they are based.
