A 4 year old can do that (Oehlen painting)

2010
Acrylic ink on magazine ad 24 x 27 cm

I am trying to draw like a 4 year old. My son is a master in this. He is 4 years old. And I love his drawings as they are so unselfconscious and unexpected and completely about exploration and the joy of marking.

It’s incredibly difficult to really draw like a 4 year old. It’s also really exciting.

As the ground I chose an advertisement for an Oehlen show from an arts magazine. Oehlen is famous for trying to create ‘bad painting’ and in that effort attaining great painting. A criticism of a lot of modern painting, a lot of modern art, actually, is that ‘it could have been done by a 4 year old’. This one aspires to that ideal.
