I devised a way to make letters using black squares, inspired by the black square from Malevich. I had making paintings, and had some concepts for text based works inspired by the 4 letter words of Christopher Wool, which later became the works in the <a href=\"https:\/\/andrebrocatus.com\/art\/maak-ruimte-expo-2023\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3082\">MAAK RUIMTE<\/a> exhibition. I was sketching a work based on the Christopher Wool painting Apocalypse Now, and then it struck me I could also make a booklet, to spell out the quote. What, for example, would a monochrome movie look like? <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I adapted my Processing program to read video and output the average of every frame back to a video file. The result is a video of monochromes, like watching a movie's reflection on a wall, but much more intense. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For my first experiment I used the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=33s-05R-BwU\">Blue Velvet<\/a> by David Lynch (1986) as the source. I love this movie, I love David Lynch, as a filmmaker, artist, and personality. I also chose Blue Velvet because of the color in the title, but also because the film has a lot of high contrast scenes and some bright colors in it. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The result was more engaging than I thought it would be\u2026&nbsp;I personally love the intense monochromes that seem to live, and the dramatic changes in color and light\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Here are some sample scenes that I think work quite well: <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->","_et_gb_content_width":"960","footnotes":""},"categories":[71,81,1],"tags":[79],"class_list":["post-3377","post","type-post","status-publish","format-video","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-black-square","category-print","category-work","tag-fill","post_format-post-format-video"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
